Vera Herchmer Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Vera Margaret Herchmer (Ross), nee Duncan, on March 28/2026, at the age of 98 years old in Nelson, BC.

Vera was born January 14/1928, in Shaunavon, SK, to Lucy & Ross Duncan & was raised in a farming/ranching family with 2 older & 2 younger brothers. After receiving her teacher's training in Alberta, Vera married Donald Ross in 1955 & had a son, Morgan, in 1957 & daughter, Marlow, in 1962. The family left Saskatchewan in 1968 moving to Riondel BC for a 3 year stay & then ultimately landed in Creston BC where Vera had always wanted to reside. South Creston School is where Vera taught many lucky children for 17 years until she retired in 1988 after teaching for a total of 35 years.

Vera's hobbies included birdwatching, her flower garden/floral arranging & she always looked forward to attending local musical concerts/plays & fairs as well as enjoying the scenic beauty of Creston & the surrounding area.

Vera was preceded by her son, Morgan, in Sept/1978, her husband, Don, in Sept/1998 & second husband, Bill Herchmer, in Oct/2003.

Vera is survived by brother Earl Duncan (Elaine) of Maple Creek, SK, daughter Marlow Ross-Hendricks, granddaughter Sierra Hendricks, grandson Garicke Hadikin, great-grandkids Lucas & Rebecca Hadikin, niece Diana Fuhrmann (Arnie) & nephew Keith Duncan (Sandra)

Vera's spirit, unwavering support & boundless love will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew & loved her, including Vera's family, friends, fellow United Church members, students & teaching colleagues. She touched the lives of many & will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
