Pauline Menu Obituary

Pauline Menu, age 78, much loved wife of Gerry Menu for 38 years, passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 4, 2020 in Creston, BC. Pauline was born in Peace River, AB. to the late Anna and Ned Bachmeier on May 27, 1941.

Pauline attended school in Peace River and Rocky Lane graduating from T.A. Norris in Peace River. Shortly after high school Pauline married the late David Tjostheim and had five children in quick succession. These were hectic times with five small children and a farm to look after but Pauline made time to sew Barbie doll clothes and matching special occasion outfits for her children, tend to a large garden, volunteer with the local Catholic Women’s League and start the first of a variety of occupations.

When the older children were in elementary school Pauline moved the family to Peace River starting a new chapter in her life. As the children got older Pauline became Mom’s Taxi, softball coach, artist, real estate agent, and chef. Her pies, dinner buns, cabbage rolls, bread & butter pickles, rhubarb relish and Saturday lunch soups became legendary with her children and their friends. Pauline also had a desire to see the world and one of her biggest feats was going to Singapore to visit her cousin, Kay Elter & family, with her three oldest daughters.

As Pauline’s children were reaching adulthood she met and married Gerry Menu in 1981 in Peace River. They operated the Pet Place and the Burger House in Peace River before moving to Calgary, AB in 1997. Pauline became very active in her new home including city and mountain hiking, painting with oil, acrylic and water color, and as a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Pauline’s love of travel and experiencing new foods and cultures continued with Gerry with trips to Fiji, Mexico, Hawaii and Costa Rica.

Pauline and Gerry moved to a rural area near Creston, BC in 2013 when Gerry retired. Pauline quickly became involved in a local art group, seniors curling and the church. She loved all the local fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy products, flowers and the relaxed, friendly lifestyle.

Pauline is survived by and will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband, Gerry; her daughters, Gaylene & Rollie von Stackelberg, Frances & Dean Walker, Sandi & Ralph Persoon, Colleen Tjostheim; her grandchildren, Christa & Scott Blair, Candace von Stackelberg & Jeff Karren, Brad & Gemma Miller, Nicole von Stackelberg, Miranda & Derek Johnson, Erin Persoon; her great grandchildren, Jordan, AJ, Lexi, Nathan, Owen, Jayda, Lilyn, Payton, Zander, Deacon; her siblings, Louise Nielsen, Jim Bachmeier, Ken Bachmeier; and a large extended family and many friends. Pauline was predeceased by her son Robert Tjostheim.
