Elmer was born in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, on October 20, 1938, along with his twin sister, Elma. He is one of eight siblings born to Clement Wesley and Rose Bekar (nee Nagel). The family moved from Saskatchewan to Creston in 1942. After graduating from high school, Elmer left Creston on his BSA motorcycle for Calgary, where he worked at a gas station temporarily before enlisting in the Canadian Military, where he served for three years. He then returned to Creston, where he pursued a career in construction, training as a carpenter and architect. Elmer was married for 30 years and has two children, Glenn and Shawn Bekar. Elmer enjoyed fishing, playing hockey, dancing, playing cards, observing nature, and socializing. When telling stories of his life, it was always about the people and the relationships he formed. Elmer loved to joke and did not take himself or life too seriously. He also loved Creston and always referred to it as “God’s little acre”. He is predeceased by his parents and older siblings, Claire, Clement Ferdinand, Angeline, and Arlene. He has three remaining siblings, RoseAnn, twin Elma and Joan. The family wishes to give a special thanks to all the staff at Swan Valley Lodge and Carol and George for all the support and care they provided to Elmer. The family would also like to acknowledge Don, Darren and Bernadette for their support and care.
