It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of Demetre Karountzos, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, and friend. Demetre left this world peacefully on June 19, 2024, in Creston, BC, at the age of 73, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on January 5, 1951, in the picturesque village of Loukas, Greece, Demetre's journey led him to Creston, where he planted deep roots and became a beloved member of the community. His infectious spirit and generous nature touched the lives of everyone he met. Demetre is survived by his devoted wife, Sally Fisher; his loving children, Vlas and George (married to Jenna); and his cherished stepchildren, Dana, Tracy (married to Jason), and Jeff. His legacy also lives on through his adored grandchildren, MaoMao, Jordyn, Gabby, Wyatt, and Lyall. Demetre will also be fondly remembered by his dear sister, Vasiliki, his cousin Jim, and a host of nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
Demetre was the proud chef and owner of Demetre’s Catering, where his culinary talents and warm hospitality became the cornerstone of countless community events and family celebrations. His passion for cooking was matched only by his dedication to service. In 2023, Demetre was honored as Citizen of the Year, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his community. That same year, he also received the prestigious Wishbone Award, recognizing his charitable endeavors.
Demetre's service to others was further acknowledged when he was named Lion of the Year for 2022-2023. His selflessness and dedication to the betterment of his community earned him the Heart of Gold Award and the esteemed Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowship Award in 2022. These accolades were a reflection of his generous spirit and the positive impact he made on the lives of others.
Beyond his professional and philanthropic achievements, Demetre was a man of many interests. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as gathering friends and family around a bonfire, where stories and laughter would fill the air. He was an active member of several organizations that reflected his values, including the Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, Free Masons, and Legion. These associations were not just social outlets for Demetre but avenues through which he could extend his kindness and support to those in need.
Generous, selfless, and spirited – these words encapsulate the essence of Demetre Karountzos. His ability to give without expectation and to lead with a compassionate heart made him a beacon of light in the community. Demetre's legacy of love, service, and joy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we bid farewell to Demetre, we take solace in the memories we shared and the profound impact he had on our lives. His spirit will forever be a guiding force, encouraging us to live with the same generosity and zest for life that he exemplified. Demetre Karountzos will be deeply missed, but his legacy will endure in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
In keeping with Demetre's love for life and the joy he found in bringing people together, a celebration of his life will be held at a date to be announced, where we will honor his memory and the indelible mark he left on the world. Until then, we hold dear the warmth of his smile, the strength of his embrace, and the indomitable spirit that defined him. Rest in peace, Demetre. Your light will never fade.
