Norman Lowe Obituary

Norm was born in Mission, BC on August 10th, 1945, to Hazel and Peter Lowe. He spent the first 5 years of his life in Springhill, BC. He then lived in places like Spence’s Bridge, Ashcroft, and Merritt, BC with his family. Norm passed away peacefully from a terminal illness with his family members at his side in his home March 7th, 2019.

In 1961, at the age of 16 and while still living in Merritt, Norm began his career working for Overwaitea Foods. At 19, he accepted a transfer with Overwaitea from Merritt to Kimberley, BC. It was at that time that he met the love of his life, Elsje MacLeod, whom he later married on July 9th, 1966. Norm and Elsje had their first child, Cindy, on June 9th, 1967 after Norm accepted a promotion to assistant manager for Overwaitea Foods, in Lake Cowichan, BC. Norm accepted 5 more transfers with Overwaitea that took the family to Golden first, where their second child, Corrie, was born on April 18th, 1970. Eventually Norm was promoted to fully manage three stores, the first being in Kaslo, then on to manage the Creston store from 1972 -1974 and eventually returning to manage the Kimberley store in 1974. In 1976, Norm chose to leave Overwaitea. He pursued a new career with the City of Kimberley; eventually becoming a journeyman water technician, and staying with them until his retirement in 2003. In 2005, Norm and Elsje returned to Creston to be near their grandchildren and enjoy the more temperate winters. Norm had many hobbies including fly tying, reading, playing pool, carpentry, fishing, crib, and socializing at various community establishments. Norm also enjoyed and participated in many competitive sports including karate, hockey, downhill skiing, water skiing, and he heartily participated in many cribbage and pool tournaments. He enjoyed fishing at beautiful East Kootenay lakes including, White Swan, Premier and Kootenay. He was an avid volunteer having been involved with various fundraising efforts and the volunteer fire department in Kimberley. Norm was very witty; his great sense of humour having assisted in masterminding a number of April fool’s day pranks on loved ones over the years. Norm was very intelligent and solved many a conundrum for his family members and he loved them unconditionally; never holding a negative judgment of them regardless of the situation. Norm especially enjoyed any time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchild and his and Elsje’s time spent at their home away from home at Kootenay Lake. He relished many a happy hour at “the long table” outside their lake place with his long standing and cherished Kootenay Lake friends.

Norm leaves to mourn his loving wife of 52 years Elsje, daughters Cindy and Corrie, grandchildren Justin, Sean, Alycia (Tyler), Kyle (Aira), great grandchild Toby and his beloved dog Panda. Norm was predeceased by his parents. Norm was a humble, kind, generous man and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. At his request there will not be a public service however the family will be participating in a private celebration of life in August 2019 at one of his favorite lakes. Those wishing to make a donation in his name may do so to the Canadian Lung Association. The family wishes to thank Cindy Day, RN, Dr. Crystal Campbell and, Dr. Karen Persad for their assistance in managing Norms care and comfort.
